Young Members Lead Team USA to Disabilities Camp
Since 1983, members of the Order of Malta have hosted the annual International Holiday Camp in a different country each year. More than 450 young people with disabilities, ages 18 to 35, come together from around the world, together with family and volunteers. They live together, befriend one another and share exceptional experiences in a packed program over the course of a week.
In July, Christopher Lee, KM of the American Association and Elizabeth Demaree, DM of the Federal Association led the 16 participants of Team USA to the International Summer Camp in Salzburg, Austria. Thanks to young professional member-driven efforts and private donations, the two associations were able to join in funding the participation of six guests with disabilities. The Team USA group was drawn from a broad array of regions from both associations, including Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Boston, New York City, Baltimore, and California.
Representing our Federal Association were Tara Sconzo, an auxiliary from Atlanta; Chris Murphy, KM from Montgomery County, MD; Archer Senft, a guest, and his parents Louise Senft, DM and Deacon Bill Senft, all from Baltimore; Lucia Simpson, an auxiliary from California; and our team chaplain, Rev. Anthony Lickteig of Holy Angels Parish in Southern Maryland.
Team USA presented itself in style at the camp, serving Tex-Mex-themed entrees at an International Evening, sharing country music at the annual croquet tournament in honor of a beloved, deceased guest, and showing an unfailing team spirit at every event and excursion. Our team seamlessly integrated with those from the other 33 countries. Our guests were able to make meaningful connections and form new and lasting relationships. More than one of our guests remarked about coming away from the camp with a sense of belonging and full inclusion in the Order of Malta community.
Next year’s camp is scheduled for August 11-18 in the United Kingdom. The Team USA leadership looks forward to bringing as many as 20 people. Please email Elizabeth Demaree further information about participating in Team USA 2018.
